ABSTRACT

As case studies, there are two current distance learning programs described in this paper: the Disaster Management Diploma and the Master of Engineering in Professional Practice. Each was developed for a particular global audience using different distance learning tools and approaches for today’s learners. Lessons learned are explained.

Suggestions are made for using a blended learning approach (face-to-face, synchronous and asynchronous learning activities) and a practical, problem-based methodology with opportunities to link learning to current or future work responsibilities. Thoughts about continuous improvement through ongoing course and program evaluations are also presented.
