ABSTRACT

The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology can be used for tracking people (students and staff) and objects (Library Books and Lab equipments) in educational institutions. RFID is the use of ambient radio waves around us as the carrier of data in the product to the database in the system. RFID can serve to carry the Electronic product code (EPC) or a Unique Identification Number, which will serve as a globally unique identifier for products, places and services. The EPC can point to information related to an associated with the product, place or Service in the network (Intranet or Internet). The world would be “Internet of things” with the EPC Network.

This paper will throw light on the technology and will explain how RFID can be used in educational institutions and libraries. The paper lists a wide range of process areas where this technology could be applied like - auto-registering of class attendance-eliminating the need for staff to take attendance; Auto-return and handling of books in Libraries and much more. It is the RF (Radio Frequency) that silently does this for you.

Keywords: Rfid, Tracking persons and objects, Attendance and library.
