Mindful safety practices (MSP) can be regarded as a positive safety behaviour. Building on the perspective of high reliability organizations, MSP involves being aware of safety critical factors in the environment and acting appropriately when signals of danger arise. As segments of working life are becoming increasingly underspecified and cannot be managed by procedures alone, MSP can be of vital of vital importance. This study explores the relationship between safety climate and MSP in the maritime domain. Based on questionnaire survey data involving 2850 seafarers on offshore vessels, exploratory factor analysis was performed. One factor was considered to be a measure of MSP, while five factors were considered to be within the safety climate domain. Regression analysis, supported that a positive safety climate was associated with MSP. Safety climate factors explained 35% of the variance in MSP, of which Shipboard safety management and Management commitment to safety at the shipping company level were the two strongest predictors. MSP as a form of safety behaviour can be applied to supplement an established model, where safety behaviour is operationalized only as safety compliance and safety participation.
